2016-2017 Season

Chapter One: Friendship (November 6, 2016)
This concert reunites three childhood friends – EMSO Music Director and Conductor Dr. Elizabeth Prielozny Barnes, special guest Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Gary Stucka,and violinist Robin Fossum. A wonderful concert featuring Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, and a performance of Bizet’s Carmen Suites with narration to tell the story of the Spanish gypsy, Carmen.

Chapter Two: Holiday Dreams (December 18, 2016)
The Nutcracker ballet has long been a staple of the holiday season. Traditionally told through the sumptuous music of Tchaikovsky and ballet, the fanciful tale is the story of a young girl whose favorite Christmas toy, a nutcracker, comes to life with their journey to a magical kingdom.  EMSO and WDC will once again present this beloved classic with a new twist, not only presenting the story through classical ballet, but also with contemporary, tap, hip-hop, and other styles of dance throughout the performance.

Chapter Three: Romance (February 11, 2017)
Last season’s first Pops Cabaret was so well received that EMSO is bringing it back again this season, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Join us with a group of your favorite people to hear music from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Bernstein’s West Side Story, and participate in our second annual silent auction.

Chapter Four: Generations (February 27, 2017)
EMSO’s annual Side-by-Side performance where EMSO members will play classics alongside the orchestra students of the East Ridge High School.

Chapter Five: Traditions (May 21, 2017)
Join EMSO in celebrating Finland’s 100th birthday! This Origins series concert will featuring Finnish folk musicians and present the folk and classical music of this wonderful Nordic country. More…


2015-2016 Season

Home Cookin’ (November 8, 2015)
A concert highlighting the many musical talents and accomplishments of the avocational musicians that are the EMSO family.

Winter Pops Cabaret (January 16, 2016)
An evening of music, food, and friends – featuring everything from The Beatles to the Sound of Music. Featuring a silent auction and desserts catered by the Lake Elmo Inn.

Seventh Annual Side-by-Side with ERHS (March 2, 2016)
EMSO members sat side-by-side with high school orchestra students from School District 833 to perform a concert full of movie music.

The Soul of Russia (May 15, 2016)
A concert centered on classical Russian orchestra music and the folk songs, stories and artwork that inspired it. This program included guest artists, twin cities-based Dr. Denis Evstuhin (pianist) and the esteemed St. Mary’s Balalaika Orchestra.


2014-2015 Season

Sixth Annual Side-by-Side Concert (October 14, 2014)
EMSO members sat side-by-side with high school orchestra students from School District 833 to perform exciting Halloween inspired orchestral works.

Dancing with Sugarplums Holiday Concert (December 7, 2014)
A performance featuring musical selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker with ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop performances by the students of the Woodbury Dance Center.

Aisling Gheal (Bright Vision) – Irish “Origins” Concert (March 8, 2015)
A new collaboration with The Center for Irish Music (CIM) in St. Paul. The CIM student ensemble, which included harp, bodhrán, flute, cello and fiddle, performed traditional Irish music, EMSO performed orchestral music based on these traditions (much of which were procured from the Contemporary Music Centre of Ireland), and together we performed orchestrations of Irish traditional music originally prepared for the traditional Irish band Altan and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Dublin, a U.S. premiere.

One Thousand and One Nights (May 17, 2015)
A program focused on the art of storytelling, which featured a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic Scheherazade, including narrated stories from One Thousand and One Nights upon which this 4-movement musical work is based. Narration by Classical MPR host, Valerie Kahler.


2013-2014 Season

Concerto with Friends II (October 27, 2013)
Featured the music students and teachers from Woodbury’s own K&S Conservatory of Music as soloists. Repertoire included movements from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Telemann Oboe Concerto, Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1, Weber Concertino for Clarinet, Danzi Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon, and Mozart’s “Deh vieni, non tardar” from the Marriage of Figaro.

Sleigh Ride – A Christmas Spectacular (December 13, 14 and 15, 2013)
A holiday performance with the Woodbury Dance Center and Merrill Community Arts Center’s Vocal Stars.

Fifth Annual Side-by-Side Concert (February 26, 2014)
EMSO members sat side-by-side with high school orchestra students from School District 833.

Home Cookin’ Concert (March 9, 2014)
Members of EMSO performed as soloists and in chamber ensembles with works by Leroy Anderson, Saint-Saens, Elgar, Mozart, Brahms, and original compositions and arrangements by EMSO members.

Song of Praise (May 4, 2014)
A joint concert with the Trinity Lutheran Church Choir, Choral Director Carol Carver, and its soloists performing Felix Mendelssohn’s rarely-heard Song of Praise (Lobgesang) and his iconic Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, performed by Michal Sobieski.
